Program Background

U.S. Embassy Tokyo and the TOMODACHI Initiative, with dedicated support from MetLife Japan, launched the TOMODACHI MetLife Women’s Leadership Program (TMWLP) in 2013 with the objective to develop the next generation of globally active women leaders. Over a 10-month period, highly-motivated Japanese female university students work to hone their leadership skills. Participants attend regular group sessions hosted by the U.S. Embassy that provide training in leadership development by professional facilitator and financial empowerment by MetLife Japan. The students (mentees) are paired with female mid-career professionals as mentors to have one-on-one support and networking opportunities. Mentees are invited to visit Washington DC and New York for a week long  study trip.  All participants are invited to attend special seminars with members of government and business leaders.  Mentors and mentees are expected to attend the Annual Conference in Tokyo.
